PRIMARY EDUCATION
From 6 to 11 years we find a stage of consolidation of the foundations that were established in the infant stage as well as the construction of a firm and solid structure to be developed in later stages.

The command of language, the control of one’s own body and the ability to listen are key tools for learning in primary education at all levels.

The individualized monitoring of our students allows us to detect any problems that might arise and take immediate action.

METHODOLOGY
Our methodology is highly active with a key focus on maximum stimulation for all respective learner needs. In order to do so, we introduce tasks such as project work, emotional and physical education alongside every learning opportunity. These activities are supported by complementary exercises which help to provide a complete school experience.

Project work
Students will complete project work once per term in all subject areas, as well as in Environmental Studies. Project-based tasks are essential in the development of key still areas which allow our students to flourish academically.

  • Stimulation of curiosity and research.
  • Being able to find and extend information
  • Being able to work in a team and coexist, as well as being assertive and tolerant, which are fundamentally important internationally
  • Being able to organise effectively

  • Putting into practice the relevant communicative skills in all languages

Emotional education
An emotional balance and continuous education in values help our students to become good people, who are able to understand others and the society around them. Such an education helps them to achieve the self-confidence they need to feel personal satisfaction.

  • The basis of our work is that our students learn to recognize their own emotions, and are therefore able to identify them in other children.
  • We promote empathy as a key element to a healthy relationship between members of the group.
  • Students study each and every subject thoroughly.
  • Work is carried out in a specific way in subject areas of Ethics and Tales for thinking.

  • An assembly is held every month in order to work on the values of dialogue and agreement
  • The children learn the value of responsibility via their assigned classroom roles and tasks
  • We promote solidarity through humanitarian events in which the whole school actively participates via the GOE group (a group of students from various Secondary school years whose main objective is to promote these kinds of acts).

  • Learning through movement
By incorporating physical education into all subject areas, we are able to prioritise concentration, learning, strengthening motivation, and team work, whilst addressing the individual intelligences of all students.

  • From a physiological perspective, aerobic activity increases the concentration of noradrenalin and dopamine, which are the neurotransmitters responsible for concentration and learning.
  • When an activity is done outside, brains are better oxygenated and therefore are better able to function without stress.
  • By implementing dynamic games for learning certain concepts, our students feel more motivated and therefore acquire these concepts in a quicker and more lasting manner.

  • Several dynamics are carried out in teams so that we promote corporate work, where all students implement their intellectual and motor skills for the service of their classmates and so become a key part of the team. This causes an increase in self-esteem which has a positive effect on school performance and personal development.
  • Through this system, we exercise all intelligences that are present in every individual. All our students have the chance to shine, therefore maintaining and improving self-esteem continuously.

  • Workshops
The education offered at Hamelin has a clear holistic purpose. Hence why we strive to complement the school curriculum in order to provide a complete education. Our students in Primary take part in various workshops:

  • Chess
  • Computer science
  • Fables and stories for thought
  • Choir singing
  • Musical theatre
  • Reading club

LANGUAGES
Trilingualism
Having immersed the pupils in English during Infancy, Spanish and Catalan now begin to gain more significance as common languages in school. English, however, does continue as the main language used in the school curriculum.

At this stage of learning, there is a more detailed focus on language use. Concepts of grammar, reading comprehension and written expression are introduced.

4th language
From the 1st year of primary onwards, our students must choose a 4th language, which is treated as a foreign language in both the curriculum and in class theory. Languages currently offered are:

  • German
    • French
    • Mandarin Chinese

External exams
Students are given the chance to take official exams for their fourth language, should they wish to be certified in a specific level of the language:

  • Cambridge exams: convened by the British Institute. In 5th year of Primary students can take the KET exam (corresponding to A1 level) and in 6th year of Primary they can take the PET exam (corresponding to A2 level).
  • Goethe-Zertiikat: convened by the Goethe Institute. In 6th of primary the students take the Fit1 exam (corresponding to A1 level).
  • DELF: convened by the French Institute. In 6th of primary the students take the DELF1 exam (corresponding to A1 level).
  • YCT Exams: convened by the Confucius Institute. In 5th of primary the students take the YCT1 exam and in 6th of primary they take the YCT2 exam (corresponding to A1 level).
