Baccalaureate
At this stage of learning, students are given more independence and freedom regarding their education. They choose the best options for themselves in order to guarantee a complete education, their tutors and families acting as their main support to ensure they make the right decisions.

The Baccalaureate programme lasts for two academic years. Its purpose is to develop our students into mature and intellectual young people, who are knowledgeable regarding the skills required to perform their social roles. With all of this in mind, our students will face higher education with a great confidence and maximum opportunity for success.

The National Baccalaureate is split into three different categories:

  • Artistic Baccalaureate.
  • Scientific-Technological Baccalaureate.
  • Humanistic-Social Sciences Baccalaureate.
How does it work?
National Baccalaureate consists of 3 major blocks:

Common subjects
Students need to complete these independently of the baccalaureate they have chosen. The main purpose is to provide students with a greater general knowledge and broader skills.

Classified subjects
These subjects are specialised to work alongside the area of knowledge that the students have chosen. Depending on the baccalaureate they have chosen, they will have different subjects (Scientific-Technological Baccalaureate, Humanistic-Social Sciences Baccalaureate or Artistic Baccalaureate.) The student must choose 4 classified subjects.

Research
Students will carry out an independent investigation through undertaking an in-depth study related to one of the subjects. It is obligatory and is done in both years of the Baccalaureate. The average of the obtained qualifications in the subjects of 1st and 2nd Baccalaureate is 90% of the academic mark. The remaining 10% will be added on from the research project.

The final given mark, which acts as the key to higher education, is calculated as shown:

  • 60%: Academic record (grades etc.) from the school.
  • 40%: University Access Test.

Methodology
Our methodology seeks to generate critically thinking young minds with fully developed learning skills. Traditional lessons are combined with research and a continuously curious spirit. Our students are able to argue, reflect, compare, conclude and contemplate thanks to active and motivating methods that we have adopted at our school.

Project work
We use this method as a part of the syllabus (each term the students work on a project for each and every subject). This is the key to learning the necessary skills to let our students reach the academic objectives intended.

Research projects and laboratory practice
The school has a very active research department.

  • All of our students are investigators. They formulate hypothesis that lead to unexpected discoveries which stimulate further knowledge and a good attitude towards learning.
  • Many research projects are awarded each year in several national and international contests. The school also has science exhibitions, which are unique experiences for our students.
  • Laboratory practice is a daily activity for our students in the experimental subjects (technology, biology, physics and chemistry).

Ethics
The promotion of healthy ethics is ever-present at Hamelin and is a key part of our educational philosophy. We work to ensure that our students are able to understand others and the society around them, helping them to achieve the self-confidence they need to succeed.
